The Peka Development Group (PDG) renovated 230 and constructed 48 new houses for Orphans and Vulnerable Children (OVC) families at Peka in Leribe district during the period of 2007 to 2009.

The PDG Team Leader Mr. Janfeke Hlaping said the OVC house renovation project is part of Round 2 phase II grant whose objective was to mitigate the effects of HIV and AIDS to children especially those who lost their parents due to AIDS illnesses and those that have become vulnerable due to this disease.

The beneficiaries are selected by the care-givers from village support groups who live with these children and vulnerable families and know them thoroughly as they visit and care for them regularly in their respective villages.

Malakia Thoothe, 34 years, of Peka in Leribe is visually impaired lives with his unemployed grandmother and other four orphans. This family was identified by the care-givers as one of the beneficiary of the PDG house project.

“Our previous house was old, cracking and leaking. When it rains, the water enters the room and destroyed properties. The grandmother had to seek refuge from other relatives for the four orphans while two of us were still living here, me and the grandmother,” explained Malakia.

This family’s ordeal came to an end when Peka Development Group built them a new two-room house.

“We thank PDG and the Global Fund donors for making it possible for our family to have a decent shelter. We did not had any means of renovating our house as we are not working,” he added.

PDG was established in 2003 with two members aimed at creating jobs in order to take youths out of drugs and alcohol temptations. In 2005 the group expanded their mandates to assist OVC and chronically ill patients within Peka area.

The PDG started receiving Global Fund support in 2005 from phase I of Round 2 grant and again in 2007 from phase II of same grant. Since they received the Global Fund support, the group achieved to build 48 new OVC houses, renovated 130, assisted 1339 patients with transport to ART centers, donated blankets to 200 OVC and created 264 jobs for the community. The PDG also trained OVC on vegetables production and donated farm vegetables to OVC and chronically ill patients regularly.

The Round 2 grant phased-out on June 2009 but its legacy will live forever within Peka community. “Through the support of Global Fund, today the PDG is self reliant and established other income generating projects such as bricks formation and house construction, to sustain the jobs of youths and support OVC in our area,” said Hlaping. The PDG group still maintains the irrigation farming project as well as trees and vegetables nursery project.

Other projects of PDG are trees and vegetables nursery and irrigation project for vegetables production which were also supported by Global Fund.
