The Technical and Vocational Department (TVD) of the Ministry of Education and Training (MOET) develop business and entrepreneurial training modules for vocational schools in the country to ensure the module is able to offer business skills that empower Orphans and Vulnerable Children (OVC) to start their own income generating projects to support their families.

As part of this exercise business curriculum and teaching materials developed and adapted in vocational schools in the country to equip vocational students with business skills.

To ensure smooth implementation of the curriculum, business instructors were trained in entrepreneurial curriculum to impart the knowledge effectively to their respective students.

The TVD Deputy Director Mr. Thabang Pulumo said the curriculum is disseminated in all vocational schools. The business studies is now treated as a compulsory subject for all vocational students.

However, he said some schools are not implementing the subject due to shortage of business teachers in their schools.

The Bethel Business and Community Development Centre (BBCDC) is one of the vocational school that has already started implementing business subject to the students.

Above is one of the Bethel Student who is the product of the business studies. After acquiring business skills this student want to be an entrepreneur and self-employed. Here is her story:

My name is Liteboho Loke. I am 20 years old. My father died when I was young and my mother is an unemployed home maker.

When I reached form three I could not go further due to financial constraint. I stayed home until 2008 when I joined vocational school at Bethel where I learnt business studies, home economics and solar energy.

I will completed my studies on 2010. Last year I had a business idea and developed it into a business plan. My dream is to start a bakery at my home village in rural Mafeteng where there is no electricity.

My plan is to install solar power and operate my bakery using solar energy. The whole idea coast R10,000.00 (US $1,300). My lecturer helped me to get a donor to support my business idea.

“Thank you to Ministry of Education and Global Fund for paying our school fees. Even if I dropped from secondary school, the skills I have gained from vocational school will help me to start my own business and take care of my family future,” acknowledged Liteboho.
GFCU will follow Liteboho’s dream and share her progress here in our newsletter. Don’t miss out.
