The Department of Youths conducted HIV
and sports training for youth leaders drawn from 10 district
of the country held at Bambata Tsita in Maseru on June. The
theme of the training is “tackling HIV through sports”.
Facilitators were Youths
volunteers from the department of youths in collaboration
with kick4life, OYAP and Lesotho Planned Parenthood
Association (LPPA). Participants were youths leaders from
youth youths resource centre around the country as well as
herdboys.

Speaking during the training,
the Deputy National Coordinator Mr. Mokhothu Makhalanyane
called on youth leaders to use their skills to organize
sports events in their resource centres and villages where
they should use the gatherings to pass the HIV messages to
the youths.
“The rate of Sexual Transmission
Infection (STI) among secondary school youths is now high
while in tertiary HIV countinue to spread rapidly among
youths,” he added.

Therefore, he said, the role and
responsibility of youth leaders at resource centers is to
pass the HIV message to your peers to prevent its spread.
“We want to see active sporting events in all resource
centers to keep youths busy and away from HIV transmission,”
said Makhalanyane.
The Heardboy from Berea district
Mr. Moeketsi Mojaki said he would use his skills to train
his team in different sports and participate in youth event
to pass HIV messages.
Another participant ‘Mamoshoanae
Ranthimo from Berea youth resource centre said she has
learnt about sring games and other sports and HIV issues.
“From now-on I will organize sports events at the centre
where we will be talking about HIV with our peers,” she
added.
The HIV and sports training is
part of Round 7 HIV grant whose objective is to prevent HIV
spread among adolescent and young people through sporting
activities.
